China has arrived

VERNON – Nice freakout pic from CCA shooter Michael Burns.

This is Chinese lead Yan Zhou, with teammate Yin Liu in the background, screaming for the sweep during this morning’s action at the 2008 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship.

Canada’s Jennifer Jones was heavy with her winning draw – right from the get-go – and China stole two to win 9-7.

This is getting interesting.

UPDATE: Now China is kicking the United States – who were 4-1 coming in here – by the score of 8-1. Ouch.

Definitely interesting.

  1. Am totally disgusted at the reaction of the Canadian Ladies re: the Chinese win in Vernon today. Time for our ladies to grow up - a loss is not the end all - Jones was heavy and only she is to blame and the reaction to beating Canada was natural.
    Whining is unacceptable.

  2. Take it easy there! Many athletes, professional or otherwise, vent a bit after a tough loss. I am not saying that it is right, it is just a very common occurence. Would we have handled this situation any differently? I think not.

  3. Talk about a "Coming Out Party"!
...and they followed it up with a 10-1 whipping of the US!

This is fascinating-but I still miss Dordi Nordby, don't you?

  4. Dordi is always missed: a great sportswoman and great with a quote, too.

But one wonders if it is time for a younger generation to carry the torch in Norwegian curling...

  5. Point taken-but there's another question that has to be asked about both this and recent world championships...what the heck has happened to Scotland??? They invented the darn game and yet they're at the bottom of the heap (except the the Czechs and they're "newbies")

  7. We can't imagine how Scotland feels right now. The Munro team won their SCO championship fair and square, and had a fine season overall leading up to Vernon.

We wonder what the coaches think. A coach charged with high-performance results will no doubt be aghast. But another coach in charge of development probably realizes that more and more teams representing Scotland bodes well for the future... as opposed to one team winning year after year (like Kelly Wood... or Dordi Nordby, to use a non-SCO example).

    Catch-22?

  8. Anybody care to predict how the Chinese men will do??? :)

  9. BTW, is TSN covering the men's championship? If not, why not? Grand Forks is only a few miles south of the border!

  10. Not to put too much pressure on Team Canada, but the bronze medal game is scheduled for 6:00 PM Pacific Time. It doesn't look like there will be any TV coverage.

Do you think that the TSN folks could be persuaded to stick around? They're scheduled to show the IRL race-what show do you think would get the bigger numbers?

  11. I'm looking at the CBC website and they say that the bronze medal game will be on "CBC-BOLD".
What exactly is CBC Bold-is this another Country Canada thing?
